Founded in 1991 with a mission to make higher education more accessible for working adults and those who serve, American Military University and American Public University (founded later in 2002) have evolved to offer high-quality distance education to learners from all walks of life.

American Public University System (the System) is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) (www.hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED). The System is comprised of American Military University (AMU), American Public University (APU), Rasmussen University (RU), and Hondros College of Nursing (HCN). HLC accredits degree-granting institutions nationwide and is also recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
